1-17-12

Today we introduced "work stations" into our Pre-K morning.  Before Free Choice begins, children spend 15 minutes in a work station choosing and engaging in activities in that particular station.  There are 10 work stations.  Each day your child visits a different work station.  It will take 2 school weeks for children to rotate to and visit each work station.  After this 2-week period, children begin another rotation through the work stations.  At some work stations, there are "required" tasks/activities that each child must complete.  When your child is assigned to the "Lily Pad" or the "Project Station" for his/her work station time, he/she completes a math or language learning center with Mrs. "B" or Mrs. Spolter.  "Work Stations" ensure that children are visiting every area of our classroom and engaging in activities from that particular area.  At the end of the 15-minute work station, a timer signals to the children that they may then move into "Free Choice" time and may choose to visit any of the stations in our classroom.

During this rotation of "work stations", children will create a story at the writing station.  Using the page in the photo below, children add details to the picture and then dictate a story to the teacher.  Where appropriate, we will have children use their phonetic spelling for certain words in their story.  Look for your child to bring home his/her story to share with you in the next 2 weeks.

In the photos below are the 2 language learning centers children will do  with Mrs. "B" when they visit the "Lily Pad" during the next 2 rotations of Work Stations.

The photo below shows examples of cards children will be asked to put in correct sequential order and then verbalize what is happening in each "story".
In the photo below are examples of picture cards that children must match and then explain why the 2 items go together.
When children visit the "Project Station" during the next 2 rotations of "work stations", they will complete math and spatial reasoning activities with Mrs. Spolter.

The photos below show examples of structures children must build exactly as they appear on the cards.

Pattern Blocks are used to complete the cards in the photos below.

INITIALS ON INDEX CARDS~
To remind students about the letter sound for this week, children were asked to use letter stickers to put their initials on an index card.  Be sure to ask your child to tell you his/her initials.
