OUTER SPACE LESSON~

During Free Choice time today, children answered the question, "Do you believe there are aliens living in Outer Space?".  Later in the morning we read a non-fiction book, Is There Life In Outer Space?  After the story, we asked the children to imagine that they traveled to a new planet.  When they stepped off the rocket, what kind of creature or life did they see?  Each child drew a picture of a Space creature.  These Space creatures will be displayed in our classroom.

 FREE CHOICE FUN~
Christina working with a Space puzzle.
Caroline and Lauren completed a weaving activity.

Alek completes work on a pegboard.
 Mary's work with the geoboard.
 Seth completes a jigsaw puzzle!

Our new "POPCORN" word is....

NEW WORK STATIONS~  This week, we introduced some new activities at our Work Stations.  These are activities which children must do/complete when visiting that particular station.

At Games Galore, children can play this bean bag toss game to review our passwords.  Children toss the bean bag and then read the password next to the hole that caught the bean bag.
At the Overhead Station, children are working on this Space word search.
At the Alphabet Station, children use window markers and practice writing words and names from our Word Wall.

At Math Magic, children complete the "Target Number" activity with the target number being 6.  Children come up with 5 different ways to show an amount of 6.

At the Writing Station, children are illustrating and dictating a story about Outer Space.

In the photo below is a non-fiction story we read about the giant octopus.  It included interesting factual information.  Be sure to ask your child some of these questions...

~What are the arms/legs of the octopus called?
~What are the small circles on the tentacles of an octopus?
~What can an octopus do to protect itself or escape from a predator?
~Where did the octopus in the story lay her eggs?
~What happens to the tentacle of an octopus if a part of it breaks off?

Following the story, children drew a picture of an octopus for their Pre-K Alphabet Memory Books.

Today we helped Anna celebrate her half-birthday.  Her dad read the story, Come Over To My House by Dr. Seuss.  It was a book that he read when he was a child!  After the story, we enjoyed eating donuts from Dunkin' Donuts.  Happy Half-Birthday, Anna!

Today we learned more about our friend, Mia.  Her favorite color is pink; favorite dessert is chocolate; and favorite restaurant is Molly Woo's.  Mia shared her photos with us, including one of Mrs. Spolter holding Mia when she was just a few days old.  Mia brought in a stuffed Valentine monkey to share as her special item.  She says it is special to her because she sleeps with it.
 ZERO THE HERO~
Today we celebrated our 110th day of school.  Cooper's dad and Sasha's mom came in and brought materials for everyone to make their own kaleidoscope.  Together, we discovered there are many zeros in a kaleidoscope.  Be sure to have your child point them out to you.  Thank you for a creative, fun activity!

Today we read the story, Heartprints.
Following the story, we discussed actions or words that make our heart feel sad or hurt and recorded them on a heart with a sad face.
Those hurtful words and actions make our heart feel "crumpled", torn, and damaged.
On a large heart with a happy face, we brainstormed and recorded ways to make someone's heart feel happy and leave a positive heartprint.

This basket of hearts is on a shelf in our classroom.  When someone does or says something nice to us, we can grab a heart from the basket and present it to the person that made us feel good.  When we present a heart to someone, we must tell the person what they did to make our heart feel happy.  The person then gets to put the heart in his/her blue folder to bring home and keep.  If your child brings home a heart in his/her folder, be sure to ask him/her why he/she received it!
