Sharing our Sound Box items...

Today we read the story, Mickey's Magnet--a story about a young boy's discovery of magnets and items that are magnetic.  From the story, we learned that items made of metal are magnetic--but not all metals are magnetic.  We also learned that items made from the metals iron or steel are magnetic.  Following the story, the each child was given a magnet to explore the classroom and find things that are magnetic.

 HAPPY 100TH BIRTHDAY, ACADEMY!
This weekend, The Columbus Academy will turn 100!  Today, each child was given a Columbus Academy centennial T-shirt to keep!  Students and faculty will wear their T-shirts to school this Friday.  Dress Code should be worn from the waist down.
**WITH EVERYONE WEARING/HAVING THE SAME T-SHIRT, WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO WRITE YOUR CHILD'S NAME OR INITIALS INSIDE HIS/HER T-SHIRT.

 MARBLE PAINTING...

BUSY BUILDERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE....

Today each child had a small package of M&M's.  To determine how many of each color they had, the children graphed their M&M's on a graph.  Be sure to ask your child about his/her graph.  It came home in the blue folder today!  Of course, the best part was eating the M&M's after they had been recorded on the graph!

SEPTEMBER 19, 2011

During today's Free Choice, we opened the SmartBoard Station.  Children reviewed the letter /B/ sound with this activity.
Sophie shows her wedgit construction she made in the Construction Zone during today's Free Choice.

These are our four MARVELOUS friends who have a first name or a last name that begins with the /M/ sound.
Today we introduced our Nursery Rhyme study with "Mary Had A Little Lamb".  Mrs. "B" demonstrates how to read the nursery rhyme using picture clues and the sentence strips on the pocket chart.  Children may do this activity during Free Choice time in our class "Book Nook".

To help us remember we are doing the /M/ sound this week, we each decorated our own mask!

Don't we look MAGNIFICENT in our MASKS?!

SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

On Thursday during Free Choice time, children completed a worksheet page asking them to discriminate between pictures that do or do not begin with the /B/ sound.  This page came home in your child's blue folder.  With teacher assistance, some children chose to sound out and spell some of the words correlating with the pictures.  This is called "inventive" or "phonetic" spelling.  Children write down the letters of the sounds they hear in the word.  Please don't correct your child's spelling.  Rather, congratulate them on the success they had in spelling the words the way he/she heard them.

Caroline fills up her button board at the fine motor station.

Seth and Theo worked with the "B" stamps at the writing station.

Sophie works on the braiding board.  A great fine-motor activity!

To review the /B/ sound, we did activities on the SmartBoard.

In the following photos, children circled the words that begin with /B/ and underlined the B's and b's they noticed in the cheer.  The children are using special markers that can be used on the SmartBoard.

With a partner, children practiced "reading" the story of "Bubble Bear".

With a partner, children practiced making patterns.
