5-8-12

Today the children added eyes, a mouth, and antennae to their egg carton caterpillars.  They then rolled up their caterpillar inside of a chrysalis and hung it somewhere in the classroom.  Stay tuned to find out what happens next!

Nathan builds a tunnel in the Construction Zone.
Today we discussed what sound the letters "S" and "H" make when they are together.  Tomorrow we will brainstorm a list of words that begin with /sh/.
Today, we started making a graph to record how many days our caterpillars are in each stage of the butterfly life cycle.

PRE-K ACTORS AND ACTRESSES

5-7-12

Last Friday and today, we introduced the idea of symmetry to children using butterfly wings as a model.  We took a blank pattern of a butterfly and created symmetrical wings for the butterfly.  The teacher would put a sticker on one side of the butterfly and then chose a child to put up an identical sticker on the other side of the butterfly to make it symmetrical.  There are many activities at the Creation Station and the Discovery Station for children to practice their understanding of symmetry.

 OUR NEW POPCORN WORD~
 NEW WORK STATIONS~
At the Alphabet Station, children shake a bottle filled with popcorn and the popcorn words.  Once they see a popcorn word, they color it in on their recording sheet.

At the Writing Station, children will be creating their own butterfly stories.   Look for your child's book to come home to share with you during the next 2 weeks.

At the Creation Station, children will paint a huge butterfly.  We have encouraged children to remember what they have learned about symmetry and butterflies when doing their painting.

At Math Magic, children complete a tally mark activity.  First, a child chooses a number and represents that number with tally marks (popsicle sticks).  He/she then records the number and tally marks on a recording sheet.

Sophie and Theo build with the Butterfly and Flower Connectagons at the Discovery Station.
Seth and Anna working on a mosaic at Games Galore.

 FREE CHOICE TIME~
At the Sensory Tub, children can create a flower arrangement and set it in anywhere in the classroom.

At the Fine Motor Station, children can use pearler beads to create.
 WELCOME TO OUR NEW CATERPILLARS!~
Today, we had 2 caterpillars join our class!  After taking many name suggestions from the children, the 2 names that were randomly chosen are....Sarah and Spikey!  Stay tuned as we continue to watch how these little creatures grow and change.

 Observing our caterpillars!

At Math Magic today, some children were building with cubes.  Children can choose to make a structure that they see on a card or they can design their own structure.

Today we celebrated our 150th day of school!!  Gavin and his mom provided us with a great Spring-time activity.  We decorated flower pots and planted flower seeds in the pots.  Gavin's sister, Emily, joined us to help out too.  Thank you for a great activity to celebrate Zero the Hero day!

Kaitlin and Seth retell the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
M.J. makes the number 25 using "tally marks".
Be sure to ask your child about the story, Charlie The Caterpillar.  Here are some questions you could ask:
~What was the mistake in the story?
~Why didn't the animals in the story want to play with Charlie the caterpillar?
~Why did the animals in the story want to play with Charlie after he changed into a butterfly?
~How did Charlie the butterfly help Katie the caterpillar?

5-1-12

Check out all these words we named that begin with the /th/ sound!

In our handwriting books today, we learned and practiced how to write the numbers 5, 6, and 7.

Mrs. B taught us a new skill today--how to make tally marks.  For this activity, we used popsicle sticks.  This activity will be available at Math Magic during Free Choice time.
